Stay

Where to stay in Sarajevo

Pick the area first, then the hotel. The city is compact, but every part has its own rhythm, and that shapes your trip more than the room does.

Which area suits you

Short and honest, from people who live here.

  • Baščaršija

    Lively

    First visit, short stay

Sebilj, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and the copper alleys right outside the door. The busiest part of town and the easiest base, with the call to prayer as your alarm.

  • Ferhadija & Centar

    Some noise

    Cafés, shopping, longer stays

The Austro-Hungarian blocks between the Eternal Flame and the cathedral, with the best cafés and wine bars. Lots of apartments, flat streets and everything on foot.

  • Bistrik

    Quiet

    Views, couples, quiet nights

The hillside across the Miljacka from the old town, by the brewery and the Trebević cable car. Small guesthouses with terraces, five minutes down to Baščaršija.

  • Vratnik & Kovači

    Quiet

    Old mahala life, sunset views

Steep lanes of the old walled mahala, up past the Martyrs’ Cemetery to the Yellow and White Fortresses. Authentic and peaceful, but the climb is real.

  • Marijin Dvor

    Some noise

    Business trips, museums

The modern centre around the Parliament, the National Museum and the big business hotels. Easy parking, a short tram ride to the old town.

  • Ilidža

    Quiet

    Spa, families, airport

The spa suburb by Vrelo Bosne, with a chestnut-lined alley, thermal hotels and green space. Close to the airport; plan on the tram or a taxi to the centre.

Good to know

The small things nobody mentions until you arrive.

Registration
Your hotel or host registers you with the police on arrival; all you need is your passport. Staying with friends? You have to register yourself within 24 hours.
City tax
Charged per night and usually already in the room rate. With apartments, ask before you book.
When to book
For the Sarajevo Film Festival in August, New Year and Ramadan Bajram weekends, book a month ahead. The rest of the year a few days is enough.
Apartments
Baščaršija, Bistrik and Ferhadija have the best apartments. Check for a lift and parking; many streets are steep and narrow.
