Baščaršija

The 15th-century Ottoman bazaar: copper alleys, ćevapi smoke, pigeons around the Sebilj and the call to prayer.

Baščaršija is where Sarajevo began. Founded by Isa-beg Isaković in the 1460s, the bazaar was once home to dozens of guilds, each with its own street — coppersmiths on Kazandžiluk, leatherworkers on Saračka, goldsmiths on Kujundžiluk. Today it is still the city's living room: locals cross it on the way to work, tourists linger at the Sebilj fountain and every second doorway leads to a buregdžinica or ćevabdžinica. Come early in the morning for the quietest light, or after the evening prayer when the lanterns come on.
