Sebilj Fountain

The wooden kiosk fountain at the heart of Baščaršija — legend says drink from it and you will return to Sarajevo.

About

The Moorish-style Sebilj on Pigeon Square is the city's most photographed landmark. The current structure was built in 1891 by the Austro-Hungarian architect Alexander Wittek, replacing an Ottoman fountain from 1753. It remains a working public fountain.

History

Sarajevo once had hundreds of sebilj fountains; this is the one that survived as the symbol of the city.

Local tip

Buy a bag of corn from the vendors to feed the pigeons — and fill your bottle at the tap.
